Lightbulb Easier Reading of Threads with Large Pictures

For whatever reason, some folks have a hard time resizing their images before posting them to threads. While it may depend on your screen size, generally, it is best to post images that are equal to or less than 1000 pixels wide.

Having said that, it doesn't change the fact that many existing threads have large pictures that cause the text of ALL POSTS to be spread very wide - beyond the width of YOUR screen...

This forces the reader to scroll back & forth for each and every line of text to be able to read the posting - YES, even those posts that do not include the SUPER WIDE photo...

Here's an alternative way of reading such a thread...

At the top of every thread is this function bar... Pick the Thread Tools button... That will drop down the menu...

Then select the 'Show Printable Version' button... This will show the thread in a text-only format that eliminates the showing of the images, but it still has the links to the images so you can selectively click on the link to look at the image - or choose to open the image in a separate tab (if your browser allows that)...

Using this function will allow you to easily read those threads where someone has unfortunately posted very large images making it difficult to read the text of their AND ALL postings that are on the same page...

Once you are shown the thread in the text only format, you will be presented at the top of the page with the 'tree' of where you are reading the thread (here's what you get if you use 'Show Printable Thread' on this thread:

The Sportster and Buell Motorcycle Forum - The XLFORUM® (http://xlforum.net/forums/index.php)
- Forum FAQ/HOW TO (http://xlforum.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16)
- - Large Picture Threads - Easier Reading (http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2071979)

These will be links to allow you to return to reading the present thread (the last link above) in the normal fashion or select the sub-level where this thread is listed, or go back to a higher level above this thread...

OR - Simply use your browser BACK BUTTON to return to the normal, picture-displaying, thread mode...

------------------------------------
If the image is only a small bit wide...
------------------------------------
You could try using the browser page reduce/enlarge function ---

Press & Hold the Control Key - then also press the '-' key to reduce or '+' key to enlarge the size of the browser page...
Repeating this action will continue to reduce/enlarge the page or reverse the previous action...

Using this function will also reduce/enlarge the text font size as well - So reducing the page size more than one or two levels may make reading text difficult...

Using Control-0 (that's zero) will return the screen to the default page size...

Thanks, good to know...but am curious if some site setting can be changed so that photos automatically resize to fit the users screen. Years ago saw this problem fairly often but these days this is the only site where I still do.
BTW my Chrome browser shows the site as "Not secure" for the last few weeks...and fairly often I wanted to "like" someone's post but couldn't as I'm not a Facebook member.
LOTS of good info here but the user interface is frustrating plus insecure per Google...so for Sportster info I end up browsing elsewhere.

No.

Some time ago we tried something that automatically made pics smaller, but the result was that for people who had taken the trouble to resize their pics properly, they ended up too small. And pics that were ridiculously too big were still rather too big. The simple answer is to be considerate and responsible and resize the pics before uploading them. It ain't rocket science.

Just give rep, using the 'Add To Reputation' button (); that's what it's for.
