Question Cannot seem to find crankcase drain plug torque specs...

*1964 XLCH

As the title says... both my Clymer and Haines give the generic "HD typically calls for 14 - 21ft lbs for lower crankcase/inspection/drain plug installment". The PO boogered up the plugs by removing them, possibly multiple times. When I rebuild the motor I had both crankcase holes helicoil'd and the new plugs have been finger tight in each hole since. I'm going to use thread sealer and new washers and want to torque properly for final installment (I do not plan to remove either at any point).

I've also seached my HD PDF manual and have found nothing speaking to proper ft/lbs each should be set to. Anyone have any idea?

It's hidden in there on page 6-4 under torque specs in drive/transmission section. It's 14-21 ft-lbs.

The torque value in the FSM is for a dry plug. Anti-seize will add pre-load to the final torque. If you use anti-seize and 21 ft/lbs on the factory aluminum threads, you are, in affect, over torqueing the plug.

But, since you are using a helicoil (no aluminum threads), the torque value can probably be higher but I haven't looked into that.

If your intent is be 'by the book' on your torque value, you should lower the value on your wrench by app. 20% of the advertised range to get near 'actual' torque at the plug.
