Now you're talking. They balance each other out well, the tank and the nacelle. The seat and exhaust help give it that classic H look.

THANK YOU!!!!!!

And I see that it’s not a huge, Noticeable piece..
However, with the trouble I’ve had just trying to get the factory speedo to work, dunno if I even want to deal with a similar piece. I think I may go to the bicycle style, I.e. electric...

So thank you again for your help, I’ll post back with pics of what I come up with

I took this picture from one of my big twin parts catalogs.

I think it is a better picture of the tach drive cover assembly.

At least it seems less confusing than the Sportster catalog picture.

I found this interesting.

It seems like a good solution for putting a tach on a timer bike without the tach drive timer cover, or clearance for a cable etc.

I have never seen a Smiths style electric tach so you have to use the 70's style or newer, but it is bolt on and you don't have to modify anything on the bike.

Get a Superglide tach,a dual gauge mount and some wire and your good to go.

As far as I know all shovelhead superglide tachs were electric, nosecone shovelheads never had a place for a mechanical drive.

I learned the following from my 74 Superglide,

The 74 and 75 Superglide tachs ran from a wire from the voltage regulator, the signal for the tach came from the alternator.

This is a alternator signal tach, you can see one terminal says alt and the other is ground.

The 3rd terminal toward the bottom is also a ground it's the case ground for the illumination light.

This one will not work off of the ignition on any bike. It will only work with the matching alternator (a 12 pole) and regulator, Shovelhead.

This one is a 76 and newer. The TRIG terminal connects to the points (timer) side of the coil and the other should go to the IGN terminal on the ignition switch. The third one on the bottom is also ground for the light.

It is set up for one spark per revolution.

It's pretty easy to spot a Superglide (electronic) tach, they all have the big black dot on the face. The Sportster mechanical drive doesn't have that.

The back is what makes the difference.

71-73 Superglides didn't come with a tach.

71&72 had the FLH dash and big speedometer.

73 had only the small speedometer.

A tach might have been an option in 73 but none of the books I have show it.

I know this is a lot of big twin stuff but it might help someone trying to use one of these tachs on a sportster.
