I always anneal any copper head gasket. Do it on a brand new gasket you'll feel the difference.

appreciate all the responses guys - got one head on no problem with the gaskets in place. Then my dumb ass didn't realize I'd bought a ring compressor that doesn't fully release so i had to snip it off and order one that has a quick release

You can ease the rings in with your fingers if you are patient and careful. I never use a compressor on a bike.

I was instructed to use a small dab of non hardening permatex where the case halves come together under cylinder base gaskets for no leaks. after many years of doing this I can say it works, most base gasket leaks I've seen are in these spots.
