Overthinking. The clutch release will keep the bearing pushed over to the left on a dry.
No end play will be lost.

If you don't shim the trans with the bearing to the left you will have too much end play when the bearing gets pushed over by the clutch release.

It's a worse situation on a wet clutch because the clutch release pushes in the opposite direction. The bearing must be to the right when the trans is shimmed, or when the clutch release is operated it will push the bearing over and close up all you end play and smoke the thrust washer.

Dr dick told me to smooth the inside of the recess where the springs sit to keep the rough cast surface from wearing the the springs. I dont think machining is necessary. I think we talked about a sanding roll

OK, moved the clutch bearing to the left in the trap door and put it on Loctite 603. There's an endplay in the bearing itself, so if I push the clutch gear all the way to the right, I get m/s end play of .0003", all the way to the left - .0094, if I don't push it, I get around .006" or something like that (don't remember the exact figure).

mct496, thanks for the tip! I used a small file there to smooth the surface just a little bit. There was one bad spot from casting, sort of a tiny bump, I removed it with a grinder, but it was hard to get there without touching other spots. I should have thought of using sand paper instead of a file, though.

I used OS m/s rollers of unknown manufaturer, which had p/n 9096 so they were supposed to be +.0004", actually they were +.0003" (.1565"), and some were +.0002". And yes, 23 OS rollers don't fit, just 22 (Dr Dick had a drawing explaining that). I couldn't get rid of an oval in m/s right race, so the clearance is now .0007"-.0020". Don't know if such oval is acceptable, I used an expandable lap (Acro Laps), which I guess got a barrel shape because it had to be expanded from 1.25" to 1.3".
