So, what actually heats the oil up enough from a cold start to initially move faster into the check valve and lower the oil pressure?
The propeller effect of the gerotors, the engine or a combination of things?

heat from combustion is certain.the effect from squeezing through the gerotors would be minimal.

So, the oil has to wait for the engine to heat up before free flowing?
I realize some oil will get to the engine through the check valve anyway.
But the warm up period seems so dangerous to the engine in cold weather even though it's a short period of time.
Until now, I've not given a thought about hopping on in below freezing temps.

Maybe I'm not picking up what you're putting down, but the oil has no choice but to flow when the pump creates pressure. The areas that could suffer are those that require splash to feed them.

The proper multi weight oil for the temps riding in would be the best idea in my mind and limit cold weather damage

It just doesn't flow as quickly on a cold start in cold temps.
Makes me wonder what that does to the engine.
I'm respectful in traffic but ride it like I stole it when I'm all by myself on the open road.

In the winter, I'm usually taking the long way to work on the interstate.
Higher RPMs starting about 5 mins after startup.
The oil doesn't heat up as fast in that kinda cold.
So, it just makes me wonder if I should of taken the city route.

The warning in the 79-85 FSM made me wonder if the hard turning of the gearshaft might be caused by the gerotors.

Use of late style gerotors in early style oil pump bodies and covers could cause the oil pump to bind.

It is conceivable to buy a used pump to find unwanted parts of various year models inside.

If you have an early and late style pump, could you take pics of the different gerotor surfaces in the body and cover so we can see what to look out for?

Yup I will do the bodies and covers next.
It's is very hard to see the differences in the bodies. It is even harder to get a picture of it.
I was able to identify the differences best by feeling with a pick.

I have one NOS -75 pump body to compare with as well.
