They've reformulated Dexcool about a year and a half ago, because of these problems. It originally had silicone properties that would turn to a sand consistency around 60-80 degrees F. Now they, supposedly, eliminated this problem. The old Dexcool required GM to change the metals in their waterpumps to prevent premature wear. It also would eat at the linings of the waterhoses causing the recovery tanks to get a black residue in them. All this because the silicone in it would turn to sandlike properties at 60F and smooth out after 80F..That's why GM advised not to use Dexcool, in vehicles, that didn't come from the factory with it.

good to know.
i know that you could not mix with others even in minute quantities as it would gell up when cold, maybe the new formulation stopped that issue also.
one of the biggest issue for gm was the iron and aluminum combo the silicates were supposed to suppress, the electrolytic properties of dissimilar metal, by coating the walls forming a barrier. none of my rice vehicles use it.

When I first realized that Dexcool was different, I had done a coolant flush on a customer vehicle and it felt more like water than anti-freeze (started asking a lot of questions around the dealership). The biggest difference is Old Dex, mixed 50/50 is good for -65F. New Dex, mixed 50/50 is good for -45F.

The seal will probably fail before the composite impeller.

The term 'plastic' is the same as 'metal'... there's a wide range of different types suited for different jobs. It depends on what type of 'plastic' is being used but if you got one with a reputable name then I wouldn't worry.

First thing I do when I buy a used vehicle, all GMs, is flush that dexcool out. And you have to make sure you get it all out. Reformulated or not, I don't use it. It also caused a big problem with the plastic intake gaskets they use to use. You can tell by looking at the gasket where it sticks out if you have the updated metal gaskets. Old ones were orange.
I run nothing but GM and I haven't used dexcool in them for at least 15 years. Probably more like 18.
Not one of GMs better ideas.

reputable can have a wide meaning. i looked at jegs and the elderbrock hp one with powered metal impeller, a step up from the stock replacement from elder but pushing 300 dollar range.
i did not buy a oem pump so i would say my chances of over-seas is near 98%, shoot even gm farms their out to diff countries. it did come with a warranty so i suppose there is at least some quality there.
i would have liked to rebuild the original but they make it near impossible to do so, sorta like alternators, everything is crimped now and that makes for no leads to use once it is snipped and soldering on a pigtail is a trick in itself.

Plastic is not for me, definitely. Metal is better
