First time I rode a motorcycle with a w/s was in 1985. I had just bought a '78 Yam. XS 650 and it had one of those butterfly looking windshields (popular for jap bikes in the '70's & '80's) on it. The next day I took it down the Interstate, got hit with a high cross-wind (a common occurrence here in ND), and almost smacked the guardrails on a bridge going over the Missouri Riverr. When I got home I removed it and sold it to a neighbor for $10. The next year I added a Suzuki GS550E w/Calafia fairing, trunk and bags to my stable. I really didn't have any problems with crosswinds riding this. Only put about 25k on the Suz. while I put about 77K+ on the Yam. The only time I use my w/s on my Sporty is long rides in unpredictable weather.

Back in 78 I got a Honda and bought it new with a Vetter fairing. It even had a cigarette lighter. I rode the bike that way for a year. Then I was fed up with the paint and went on a painting spree where I painted the bike 7 times until I had the colors I wanted. The fairing never went back on. Immediately when I took it off the front of the bike got lighter, the steering felt way better, it got around in tight traffic much better, and I could feel the wind in my face again. I will never put a windshield on a bike again. I put that thing in the front yard and sold it for almost what I paid for it new.

Yup! Part of the experience. In recent years H-D got so good at eliminating the vibrations their bikes were once denigerated for that they actually had to back off a bit because there were complaints that they were too smooth.

To each his own. I have nothing against anyone else's windshield and only ask they pay the same courtesy to my choice to face the elements. RTFS!!!!

Crosswinds scared the life out of me too! 40 years ago I swapped bikes with a guy at work during our break. I had a 78 export Triumph Bonneville, he had a 76 or 77 (can't remember) BMW R75. He got the BMW from an old guy & it had a tall screen, crash bars & panniers. It was my first ride on a shaft drive bike which made me cautious. The shaft drive caused me no problems but a strong side wind caught me as we left town. It gave me a real fright, think that's when I started going grey!

I bought my Roadster used, and it came with a windshield. It's good for travelling and for winter riding, but I like the bike without it for around town or for shorter rides. I think the bike looks a lot better without the Windshield, and the shield detracts from the riding experience, except on long Interstate rides or in frigid temperatures.

I didn't answer the survey, because sometimes I like having a shield; but I'm glad it's a Detachable, so I can leave it off when I want.

Except for the first sentence, I agree completely. I didn't vote either.
