What Eric was referring to is known as a Travener Jig.

Click on the "wheel building jig" pdf and you'll get an illustration of what the jig is.
It is an EXCELLENT thing for novices but requires you set it up using a known, good wheel. Otherwise, it's not faster, just easier because the wheel is horizontal.
It also doesn't work well on things like full and half width fronts which require you to pre-spoke everything before fitting the rim over and carefully fiddling it all into place.
But, for "normal" hubs like a spool . . . they are a god-send for occassional wheel lacers.
That's my long way of saying -- good on you for getting this right.

Yup, while lacing I recognized the necessity of the (now known to me) Travener Jig. Thanks for the link!
