Repacking the steering bearings is def a good idea, although the squeak can come from something else... the cable housing moving along the frame. Ask me how I know

THIS was my 1st thought after seeing dozens of bikes in the shop for exactly this.
usually it's because people test it when NOT on the bike so the springs aren't compressed, but when you're riding, squeek.

Yup-that makes excellent sense. I’ve never thought about it-but I guess being scared of dropping the bike has paid off, there, because every time I have tried to recreate it, I’ve been sitting on the bike.
I find it very curious that it only makes the noise when the bike has been ridden a bit-mostly in parking. It doesn’t do it when the bike is cold, and it only does it the first time or two that I turn the bars when I park-after that, it won’t squeak again.
Now, my big question is this-what does it take to get to that bearing on my bike?
2007 XL1200R. Is it just a matter of removing the cover cap, loosening the pinch bolts, and removing the bolt in the center? Am I gonna have to take the whole triple tree apart?

it's a very intensive procedure to replace the steering stem bearings..
not only will you be taking off the cap. you have to remove the forks, and the triple tree, and the lower bearing which is pressed on, Then install the new bearing, however, you will need specialty tools to install the bearing races in the steering neck.

That’s what I was afraid of. I don’t have the ability to be doing that in my driveway.
Been raining the last few days-if I can, for certain, confirm that is not a wheel bearing, I’ll find someone to pay.

if you have even the basic bike jack you can determine if it's the neck bearings or not.
you don't need to pay someone for diagnostic work if you're capable.

and plenty of online solutions to making your own bike lift out of a couple pieces of wood and a lever..



Try and isolate the noise. is it only after riding, or only when cold. can you recreate it at will ?

2×4's will increase your confidence with a sizzor jack vastly, 3 or so inches at a time (as you'll want the 2×4s back a bit so you get full motion on the jack) , if she fell, she'd just land on the wood and your never more than an inch and 3 quarters away from a solid base (bc 2×4s aren't 2×4)

Well, something changed today.
Rode to a graveside service today-and since I was a very low speed for a considerable distance, I was able to listen and hear everything very well.
The whine use to only show up when I’d been riding a while, then only when I was turning the front end.
Now it’s a constant whine, when going straight. Almost sounds like brakes, but applying brake pressure has no effect on it. I’m gonna try to pull the tire off again tonight and see if I can confirm bad wheel bearings. I checked before and they seemed alright-maybe I missed something, or they weren’t bad enough to really grab my attention.
I still need to fiddle with the neck, but I’m thinking that it’s really looking like wheel bearings.
