Default Transmission fluid as opposed to gear oil

This is an ironhead sportster question that has me scratching my head. It starts with a Shovelhead 4 speed transmission. I know in my shovel, my engine oil is the same as my primary oil because they both pump through the oil pump and are distributed to respective locations. The transmission gear oil is separate and is measured and filled at an independent location. With my 1970 sportster I have been using the same principal for the engine oil and primary oil figuring that the transmission is fed engine oil through gravity and there is no separate location for filling the trans oil. It is combined with the primary oil when you add through primary hole.
Am I correct or am I missing something?
