Default Need Ideas for a home made rack platform

I'm doing a lot of motorcylce camping in August and want to build a homemade platform that will bolt to my HD detachable rack.

Has anyone done this? I need room to carry a tent, sleeping pad, and bag.

Any Ideas? fasten a wooden platform with u bolts? screw clamps?

Thanks in advance

Kuryakyn makes a touring bag support if you're looking to buy something

http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/162...ng-Bag-Support

A nice pelican case would work great too...but they are pricey for new ones. Lots of sport tourers have done it.

I seen a grate for an outdoor grill that might could work...

Thinking way outside of the box (no pun intended), you could always bolt up a rubbermaid action packer...I've seen it done on several sport-touring bikes as well.

Pete... I have that rack but to put a "platform" on it might be tricky. I also have a HD tour-pak with a detachable rack with a nice flat top that would be easier to bolt a platform to. I would go with aluminum instead of wood.

Now that I'm thinking about it "Screwloose Dan" built one. I hope he doesn't mind me posting a pic of his bike.

The rack is sold separate from the tour-pak and it will mount right up.

Brad built one like is pictured above, as well. Don't know if he's still using it or not...

I like the idea of the tourpack rack, can't find it on the HD site as a separate item.

edit found it part number 53655-04 $139.95

I think thats the way I'll go.

The mod SL Dan did to his was really sturdy and made it pretty universal. The holes made tieing things down to it easy. It looked like a "must have" for anyone that does a lot of long distance riding.

Correct, I copied it from Higgy 4 or 5 years ago when I saw his. Been using it ever since. I've strapped all sorts of different setups onto it.

It also makes a great way to carry firewood to the campsite. Wouldn't want to go very far, but I've carried an amazing amount of wood with my setup.

Note in the picture above, with a solo seat there is enough room to strap a couple of camping fuel bottles, full of gas. Perfect for carrying a bit of insurance.
