With points you want the 5 ohm coil, a 3ohm coil will allow the points to burn from less resistance.

The coil on my 81-XLH measured 4.2 ohms and has been fine with points.

Well, your 4.2 ohm coil has too much resistance for an electronic ignition system. Run with it and see how long it takes to smoke the electronics.

4.2 ohms is close enough to 5 ohms to not make a significant difference. if you had a 3 ohm coil, that would be too low of a resistance and it would cause you trouble with prolonged use.

Having a good condenser will protect your points also.
