Default Oil light flicker and the check ball and spring?

I saw a posting here a short time ago but I was unable to find it again. It was about the oil light coming on/flickering and it was said that a weak spring or bad deal on the check ball could cause that.
Wasn't able to find out if that was actually correct. Is that something that can cause the oil light to flicker?

All possibilities I assume you are suggesting, core2ct me if I am wrong please.

I can know a few of those off.
It happens at various rpm not just idle.
Pressure oil switch is new
Oil is good at least at dipstick check.

Those are what came to mind as possibilities but they may be more.

What's the best way to test the switch?
I was thinking of a low pressure gauge rigged to a syringe full of oil.

New doesn't always mean working but the odds are up.

Wiggle the wire on the electrical connection around with the power on and check for a short.
A short doesn't have to be at the connection. It could be along the wire itself.

The springs have been known to be the cause.
If the spring has been stretched, it will cause the check ball to push harder against the oil feed and change the pressure at the switch intermittently.

You can put a gauge in at the at the filter housing to check the oil pressure from the pump.
If it is low, you can check off the pressure switch.

Oil Pressure - The oil pump is nonregulatory and delivers its entire volume of oil under pressure to the oil filter mount. When an engine is cold, the engine oil will be more viscous (ie., thicker). During start-up of a cold engine, oil pressure will be higher than normal and oil circulation will be somewhat restricted within the oiling system. As the engine wams to normal operating temperature, the engine oil will warm up also and become less viscous - oil pressure will decrease.

When an engine is operated at high speeds, the volume of oil circulated through the oiling system increases, resulting in higher oil pressure. As engine speed is reduced, the volume of oil pumped is also reduced, resulting in lower oil pressure.

To check oil pressure, remove the oil pressure switch and insert the appropriate gauge fitting.

Run the engine until oil reaches normal operating temperature (motorcycle should be driven at least 20 miles at or above 50mph).
Then, at 2500rpm, oil pressure will vary from 10-17psi.
At idle speed (950-1050 rpm), oil pressure will vary between 7-12psi.
For an accurate reading, engine oil should be at normal operating temperature: 230°F (110°C).

Very good info, thanks. Just need to get an oil pressure gauge and fittings.
Any suggestions on where to get a decent low psi oil pressure gauge?
I guess I would need the fittings and hose as well..
