Default H-D “Factory” Demo-Rides in 2018?

In another thread:

I just tried to look up the 2018 schedule for the H-D Demo truck. No dates after February 2018 are listed at Harley’s USA website or on the Demo Truck Facebook page.

This what I found:
Sturgis:
- Harley will offer demo rides at the Pappy Hoel campground (see screenshot below)
- Nothing to indicate that Harley will offer demo rides at the Sturgis Civic Center as was done the past few years

115th MKE Party
- Demo rides will be at H-D dealers in the MKE area

In previous years, the “factory” demo rides at MKE events and at Sturgis were:
- Show your mc license
- Here’s the keys
- Follow the arrows
- Any tickets are on you :>)
- 10-mile unescorted loops including 3 miles on an interstate highway

They do, the demo fleet was at an MDA event on May 4-5, 2018. It was at Classic HD memorial day weekend.

I have done a few HARLEY FACTORY DEMO rides and a few Harley Dealership Demo Rides and there is a huge difference.
on a dealership ride usually the ride is a 3 or 4 mile loop escorted with 10 to 16 bikes. Front and rear escort and doing highway mileage predominately. As many of the riders around you are new, or untrained in group riding the ride is a bit stressful trying to stay in formation with guys who are inexperienced or just beginners. I notice a lot of stalls at stop lights. I only do these rides if I want to demo a new bike such as this year new Softtails. Otherwise I feel a lot of the feedback you want from the bike is lost because you are more worried about the group not the bike.
On a factory demo they up the game a lot. First thing is that the bikes have trackers on them so if you get off the track they find that bike fast. But this is a benefit to you as you are not having to juggle around with a bunch of untrained riders trying to stay in formation like a dealer ride. So you get to pay more attention to the bike you are on and get more feed back about the bike. This means you get to truly evaluated the bike. Seeing how the loops are longer also, they lay them out with more situations. not just get to freeway, freeway get back to dealership. They usually are balanced with freeway, town, and such and the scenery is better picked out.
I prefer the Factory demo rides a lot and if you can find one near you I suggest you go do it, you will be impressed with the bike you ride a lot more as you have time to evaluate it. Also if they are slow they may let you do a second loop just to figure it all out.

A funny story about the factory rides is when the Twin Cams first came out I had taken out a Electra Glide, when I got in the tech was asking me about my ride when 2 guys on sportsters came in and were complaining I had passed them dragging floorboard in a curve, the tech asked me if it was true and I explained I usually rode a GSXR 1100, he dismissed the two guys and asked me to take out the new SuperGlide Sport and see if I liked that. Once back from that ride 2 guys from the factory asked me for an honest review on both bikes. I spent about 20 minutes discussing them and I bought a SuperGlide the next week.

Glad you bumped this question. My dealer has these all the time but not the "truck". I was given a registration card by HD when the actual truck was in town.. so now all i have to do is show the card, my ID and i'm off riding. But it sounds like they dont have it? They will be at Laconia bike week so i can probably ask there.

Question: Were the demo rides at the MDA event “escorted”?

They were escorted but were all on back roads. They lasted about 20 minutes. When they have the demo truck at the dealerships I frequent they are also escorted and those rides last about 20 minutes as well.

The only time I have had free use of the bike was in 2003 when I did a demo ride at the York open house.

I’ve enjoyed unescorted demo rides at Sturgis, the KC factory, and at the factory celebrations in MKE many times. AFAIK, the unescorted rides were unique to H-D. I think that said something about Harley’s relationship with its customers.

I’ll be interested to hear if this year’s demo rides at Laconia are escorted.

Ill see what I can find. A few years back they were, but that was when they were at the Speedway. Now they are the only manufacturer NOT at the speedway (which is odd). They are at Weirs which is stupid since the traffic in that area is crazy.
