I like attitude, it makes things interesting. You were to the point and I can respect that. One of the guys where I work has an uncle who owns the local Victory/ Indian/ Suzuki/Polaris dealership and was completely mystified about shutting down Victory. I think he is Victory's biggest fan since he was always telling me all the "Victory News". So it's nice to hear it from someone else.

I think using the 1200 cc water cooled victory engine in teh scout was a good idea for Indian as it saved Polaris a lot of development and design money. And boy can that engine spin circles around a 1200cc Sportster.

About the original post here, I can not see the motorcompany responding fast to this bike with a new engine that can compete. After all they are still getting whipped on the flat track. They may respond with a aircolled 1200 cc and point out to heritage, but that will fall face first into the mud, the Indian is all about performance and in order to compete HD will need to answer to that. And we all know HD is very weak in that department.

MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, this is the wake up call HD needs. Maybe they will stop rebading the samo ole same ole and get it in gear and offer what the kids wnat.

BUT MORE THAN LIKELY the motor company is going to shot itself in the foot again because they are afraid of upsetting the faithful who are a crowd that is growing to old to ride anyway.

It will be interesting to see if HD responds. The problem is no one looks to HD for a "performance" bike so anything they do won't sell very well, at least not for a while.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let's see IF/WHEN/HOW this bike comes out from Indian in the first place. Remember the hype over the Victory hill climb race bike, in the end what came out from Vic was just a Scout rebadged as an Octane. I.E. it wasn't a tall suspension, rearset equipped, triple disc, sport bike.

I think it's more likely we'll see something closer to a sporting bike/flat tracker from Indian this time, but what we're seeing now is a one-off show/race bike and not a production model.

So let's see what really happens there. Of course Harley can't take that same let's wait and see attitude, so I hope they're already on the ball.

Indian has been successful with their two-pronged marketing approach. Air-cooled big twins (with faux flathead engines!) for traditional riders. The water-cooled Scout (not even fake fins!) aimed at the upcoming generation of riders.

I think it’s significant that HD is not marketing the Street as a “baby” bagger or even as a “baby” Sportster. No mini-apes or forwards in the P&A catalog. I think HD’s marketing for the Street is trying to move away from the pirate-rider image.

I had once thought that HD could sell larger Street models alongside the XL line. Given the merging of the Dyna-Softail lines, the closing of the KC factory, and the very soft motorcycle market, I think we’ll see a merged Street-Sportster line come out of York.

true, but remember the Scout can already run circles around a 1200cc Sportster. They are already losing sales to those who want an American V twin in a more sports package than the big twin.

there is a saying, if you want the same old results, keep doing the same old thing. Harley really needs to embrace that right now, the kids buying motorcycles are not buying into the lifestyle, they want more.

Circles = hyperbole.

They are not the same animal sure, but I'm not sure I'd pick the Scout over a CX... actually I'm absolutely certain I wouldn't. That means Indian is going to lose a certain amount of sales to the Sporty too.

That's not saying Harley can't or shouldn't compete more directly with the Scout or something like this FTR in the future.
