5 degree rake
Hi,
Went ahead and had a new triple tree with a 5 degree rake installed on my 01 - sporty using my 39 mm stock forks. Most of the time people will put on new fork tubes 2 inches longer. However the mechanic told me there was no need because a 5 degree rake wasn`t enough to warrant putting on the longer fork tubes. While l have not ridden the bike yet, everything looks correct and the bike while lower seems to be fine. Does this setup sound like it should work?

I used a lowering kit on mine with 5 degree trees. Longer tubes make the bike sit unnaturally high on the front and looks like crap. I am sure you will be fine. I had mine setup with 12 inch rear shocks and the tubes were up an extra inch in the trees.

I went with 4* and -2" springs and it's still not level.Close but still up a little.

You'll be fine..My bike runs a 3* rake with stock tubes..with 11-3/4" shocks

If it rides fine then its fine. The test will be on highway rides. If it feels stable on the highway then you're golden. If not, you might want to raise the front (add length to the forks).

My WAG is you reduced your trail about 3 inches from stock with 5 degree trees. That may leave you with 1-2" of trail.
I guess the real test will be no hands on the bars at speed 
For peace of mind I'd use a trail calculator just cause I like to know. |

You don't need a calculator. Just have someone sit on the bike. Take a yardstick, tape measure or laser pointer to point from the neck to the ground. Mark where it hits. Then drop a line straight down from the axle (I hang the tape measure from the axle point). Mark where it hits. The difference is your trail.

I fully agree....theoretically, or at least on paper, 5 degree raked trees alone leaves me with a negative trail....adding 3 or 5 degree raked neck cups, compensates for the trail the trees eat, and brings things back close to the stock trail.
A trail calculator showed that with 8 degrees between the trees and neck cups, 4" over stock tubes had no effect on the trail. |
