Default trimmed shovel top hats

Do big twin top hats need to be trimmed to use on an ironhead?

I heard on here that some people use big twin top hats instead of stock sportster ones because they are better for some reason. So when I re-assembled my tranny I got some big twin top hats to use. But I didn't trim them.

Now suddenly I see a few threads that talk of "trimmed" big twin top hats. I never thought to trim mine. Should I be pulling my tranny to trim them before I fire it up for the first time? I don't remember seeing anything close to interference of the slightly taller top hat touching anything it shouldn't. In fact I see of my 2 spare shift forks, one has a longer stud on it and the top hat does not extend past the end.

the one on the left is an old ironhead top hat. on the right is a new big twin one

I ground down the BT Tophats in both my IH trans. I was concerned that they would catch because of the extra length but don't know for sure if that would be the case.

Big Twin top hats protrude through the quadrant slots, which may or may not cause interference. All depends on the individual transmission build tolerances. Better to be safe than sorry. Trim them 1/16" and be on the safe side. The important thing is, the BT top hats now have full engagement in the quadrant slots.

the way i understand it the longer big twin piece allows you to eliminate the tapered end that the xl tappet has.when the longer top hat is ground to length the surface will be flat and uniform.no longer tapered.you should wind up with the same length as the xl piece with no taper.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll be pulling the transmission next weekend to check. It shifted through all the gears just fine before I installed it but I did not specifically check if the top hats where close to touching anything.

Well it turns out it was touching and got pretty banged up by the backside of the socket that holds the shifter shaft ball. It touches going in and out of 2nd gear:

That's on the countertshaft fork. The tophat on the mainshaft fork doesn't touch anything so I left it alone. But I did now trim down the countershaft hat:

And now it doesn't touch any more:

Tomorrow I'll re-install.
