Nas Operating systems
I have used FreeNAS and Tnas OS's, has any tried something else?
I want simple and most of all, free.
Have a 12tb in Raid 1 but need to expand without buying a box.
I have a very nice I5 tower with plenty of bays that would be ideal, just need a non texted based OS.

IDK man... my home storage is far less than your and is kept by traditional and secure ways...
professional storage is safe on server farms...
i think you know what you are doing... and this is good... sometimes in IT simple does not means free at all...

Amahi seems nice but wants to change and take over your DNS...don't like that, wot if the box dies? I would have to go back into the router...again.

Fiddling around with hardware is really fun, but 'free' isn't always cheaper if you look at the power usage, maintainance and noise for 24/7.
Years ago I went the same way, FreeNAS, floppy shit, old hardware, Microsoft servers, noise, backups that didn't work and using a lot of power, noise. I stopped doing that and start using different NAS. I started with a single disk Buffalo NAS, later on a Zyxel twin bay using raid1, later raid0.
I scaled down to a single disk Synology DS119J with an automatic backup to USB. It only uses 5W in rest and 10W when in use. This little thing has everything. It gets it latest firmwares by itself, several backup possibilities to USB, other NAS or cloud and a plethora of free software in it. And it's quiet and fast. Synology has also multibay NAS. In the end this will be cheaper and it's 'fire and forget'. Oh, and it has a Windows like user interface with icons which works in your browser. It's like working in a remote desktop environment.

I'd like to find something like N4F that can run on a raspberry Pi..but it is not ported for that which is a shame
if you come across a stand alone NAS OS for the Pi..do pop back here and let us (me ) know please .

I just built a 10tb box made by terramaster in raid 1 using TOS for an op system. Super simple gui.
However I need to back that up with my tower. All signs lead to Linux based systems. XPEnology ( Synology booster ) looks great but sketchy.

What the hell are you talking about??
Please clean up the Celtic for us poor North Americans. I couldn't figure anything out that would help with cams, carburetors, gearing, or OIL!
