Default 1977 Shift shaft

In the process of rebuilding my 77. I have a bent shift shaft and purchased a replacement from Eastern. The new one is dimensionally different from the stocker I removed. Specifically, the arm with the ball that fits into the pawl carrier is about 0.074" shorter than the stock one. It also has a different angle than the stock. My concern is that it may not engage fully or very well, and also it would I think tend to pull the shaft closer to the pawl carrier so there is very little clearance. Appreciate any input. Trying to decide if I should use the eastern one or look for NOS or used stock.

Best way to tell is use it and bench test it. When I rebuilt my 77 trans, I clamped the trap door in the bench vise. Rotate the mainshaft and shifted up & down through the gears.

does do anything for the shift shaft.
is this a welded or pinned retainment on the ball end. you can swap end pieces or find a diff brand shaft. as another option, straighten the old shaft.
