No way Harley would let an XL be better than the flagship model.
In skilled hands an XL would beat a big twin and the moco did not play on that.
I believe they went the other way and milked it until the EPA started turning the noise screws.

The Sportster was better than the Big Twin right from the start. Quad cams, unit construction, cassette style gearbox. The Sportster was lighter, quicker and faster.

The traditionalist non thinking Big Twin riders all seem to have subscribed to the "Bigger is Best" idea and ignored (and belittled) the truth. Hence the references to a "Paper Boys Bike" and a "Girls Bike".

But then I also have a 1957 Massey Ferguson.
