Default Speedometer Interchangeability Between Different Generations.

Hi All,

I am hoping to get some insight. I bought a '03 Sporty 883 that was pretty beat up. One of the things it needs is a new speedo. I found one locally from a '17 883 (for REALLY cheap), but was wondering if they would be compatible with the same plug/harness. If not, what would be required to make them work together (is there a special adapter?)?

My question specifically pertains to the interchangeability between an '03 and a '17 883, but maybe we can get some definitive answers for all compatibility. Is there a direct plug and play between the generations? Also, is there a maybe a full parts/accessory compatibility list somewhere?

I think it extremely unlikely that they would be interchangeable, what with the '17 being CAN Bus.

Welcome to the Forum, BTW.

Yep - The '03 speedo had it's own VSS to feed speed info & the indicator lights were driven from various sources.

On the '17 models, with CANbus, the speedo gets info from the ECM & BCM and the speedo itself drives the external indicator lights.

Here's the Sportsterpedia on the Speedos:

The SP also has a chart of _some_ compatibilities but not instruments:

Thank you for this.

Now, I am wondering, if I can just use the housing/ glass from the '17, and refurb MY speedo.

The electric speedo died on my 95 and I couldn't find a replacement. I went back to a stock cable drive unit that I found on ebay. Looks better too.
