The 500/750 series just didn't have the look or feel that attracted buyers.
Other manufacturers are making better looking/better sounding bikes than the Street 500/750 that are under $10,000 so why can't Harley?
The Shadow Phantom 750 is under $8,000 and has more of a classic cruiser look and sound than the Street 750 did.
If the classic cruiser isn't the buyer's thing the competitors have multiple standard and sport options under $10,000 as well.
If Harley wants to sell to young buyers they have to give them affordable options that match or exceed the competition in that price range.
It's going to take more than brand image to sell to the next generation. Harley has to sell the actual bike, not a lifestyle.

The Sportster has the potential to compete in this arena.
What Does Harley do? Instead of making the Sportster a better value they increase the price of the 883 with nothing to show for it.
If I were a new rider with no brand loyalty I would find it hard to justify paying $2,000 more for an 883 Iron than a better equipped 750 Shadow Phantom.

Over on the Softail side it's almost the same story with the Softail Standard VS the Rebel 1100.
