The BCM must monitor lighting circut resistances to signal a bulb is out.

I am NOT a CAnBus expert, so I am no going to go farther with this...simply pointing out the challenges to 2014 up electrical mods.

I did create an alternative circuit for using a Standard Generic 3-Position Keyswitch (like pre-2014) to replace the one that HD uses on the CANbus models. It presumes you are connecting it to the same BCM contacts as stock.

It's in the Sportsterpedia REFERENCE Section:

Although I haven't tested this circuit, I am confident it will operate correctly.

Looks good, from memory same as optional switch on 2014 up.

Wonder what factory 2014 up ignition costs?

the whole point of CAN is that there is no central computer like was in past days where some minor thing goes south and you have to replace the whole she-bang.
CAN is made up of modules. now all modules must know what is going on, so the bus line.
CAN is parallel and not series, so removing a module off the bus does not effect the bus or communications. now i am not saying if you remove a CAN component that it does not effect others that rely on the info it provided. but some CAN components are not essential, lighting probably one.
in CAN, there is an heirarchy so some things take priority so other things get pushed aside until the bus is cleared for it, same thing in a computer.
when your computer needs to do something, an interrupt request is made, if the cpu has the time for it, it gets done, if not, it has to wait. the same goes for CAN. if a module needs to send out info, the can-lo will drop in voltage telling the system that info is needing to be transmitted. when all the modules agree, the can-hi will rise in voltage and the module will pass on the info. if the module has nothing to say, the can-lo & can-hi remain at the same voltage. typically a 5 volt is used and each line will have 2.5 volts, however, whether hi or low, the sum will be 5 volts.
there are checks and balances built in and the module that is transmitting will look for itself and within the transmitted info is like a check sum bit. there are several layers of CAN.
