ryder rick the going rate for IHs, and old HDs generally, is very different here. Prices are much higher than you pay in the US. £3500 (about $4600) for a fair condition roadworthy IH is a fair price in our market. That's why there are guys who make a living buying bikes in the US and shipping them over here to sell. Though with the exchange rate these days there's nowhere near as much to be made as a few years ago. Overall IH addiction is a much more costly habit here than in the US

Hughieboy - maybe post up the pics of the 74 when you get them, maybe take some more when you go to see it. Take your time, they do come up on ebay so if the 74 isn't the one for you others will appear.
Paul

Where in Suffolk is he? If its at Troston/ Great Livermere he is a good dealer.

No, not that area.... actually it was Cambridgshire, my mistake. So he came back with some pictures of the '74 from his phone and although in good nick it has a hideous cushioned 'King and Queen' seat and a bit of a 'custom' paint job which isn't to my taste. I have no issue with having to do a respray and change the seat, aftermarket clocks and other bits but due to the otherwise good condition he wants more money for it and I wouldn't want to ride it as it is, it's a bit of a tarts handbag. I preferred the originality of the other one even though it was a bit rougher round the edges! So I've told him I'll think about it, shame he sold the other one before I got to it.

He said he's putting it up for sale next week for £4500 which I thought was a bit steep although he said I could have it for £3750. Not sure at all, it isn't singing to me.
Good nick, but...

Unknown mileage due to aftermarket clocks
Big, flabby seat
Garish paint job

Am I aiming wrong and missing a bargain?

1974, last year for the right shift. My humble suggestion, get a running machine. The closer to stock the better. A 70's + machine may be easier to get parts for. I don't know how things are parts wise or anything else where you are, but you don't want your first ironhead experience to be too frustrating.

When I was shopping for my Sportster, my mentor told me "No kickstart-only Sportsters!" and, "Never kickstart a Sportster you don't know!"

This one's running, it's a fresh import from the US but has no history, uncertain mileage and despite looking tidy I don't like the custom paintjob, seat, bars or aftermarket clocks. I don't mind any of those things if the price is right but I think I'll hold out for something better priced and more original.
