I happened upon the Shoshonean Rod and Gun Club and their new sculpture:

I don't know who the chainsaw artist was for this particular example, but it turned out magnificent.

I was riding this early November day with the temps in the mid-50's. The skies were overcast and it was very breezy. Without the sunshine the wind chill was even colder.

I came upon this colonial soldier and his Quaker Gun.

The name comes from the fact that Quakers were opposed to violence and war. Such wooden cannons, while not functional, provided a deceptive appearance from a distance and were effective at deterring the enemy.

George Washington was said to have used one in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War to force the surrender of some British Loyalists. Later, they were used by both Union and Confederate forces to inflate the apparent strength of fortifications.

My Gr-Gr-Grandfather encountered Confederate Quaker Guns at the siege of Petersburg in Virginia.


This soldier actually replaces a similar one that was standing on the other side of the roadway. It deteriorated over the years and finally was damaged in an auto accident at the intersection. The owner decided to not only replace the soldier, but to give him some artillery against those dang new horseless carriages!

I was out riding on this overcast November day. The temperature was in the low-50's but the wind was very still. I rode for about 50 miles. My hands were cold by the time I got back but I still had that wide smile that comes from getting KooL Therapy...

Riding on Veteran's Day - It seemed appropriate to visit Gettysburg.

I visited Evergreen Cemetery which is adjacent to, and pre-dates, the National Cemetery.

Vehicles are allowed here (unlike the National Cemetery) and I find it sobering to ride among the headstones, both new and old.

In the background of this picture of grave stones in the Evergreen Cemetery is the Soldiers National Monument which is located past the fence in the National Cemetery.

Well, won’t be riding for at least a day or two, damn polar vortex, I moved 6” of snow last night and another 3” today, low tonight expected to be 5F, high tomorrow 20F, doable for me but many roads and parking lots are terrible. Issue with dropped cylinder, again, to deal with. Garage overhead door fubared, don’t feel much like laying on cement in that type of cold. Always something, this too will pass.

Paul - I feel for you, pardner - It will be cold here, too, although not like that...

Laying on the floor - Get yourself a strip of old carpet (preferably rubber backed) - Insulates you from the concrete - I also use those 18"x24" sample carpets (folded in half) as knee pads when I'm working around the bike or the lawn tractor in the garage...

Stay warm for now - No reason to risk life & limb with ice & snow on the roadway... At our age, the body doesn't heal nearly as fast as 20-years-ago...

Hippysmack - Fishing? Not for me - I don't have the patience for it... But I do love the taste of freshly smoked/cooked Trout that my brothers would share every now and again...

It's good for the soul.
I guess that's why I enjoy your pics with water boundaries.
Reminds of that 20 pound catfish that tried to steal my pole.
I guess I should have said 40 pound since it truly was 19lbs and some ounces.
It didn't hurt to have some suds back then either.
All memories now though.

I've went to carpet shops before to buy small pieces for my studio when it was up and running.
They gave me quite a few 4-6 ft squares and pieces and scraps.
