Really.

The engineers at the MoFoCo aren't stupid. Why would Harley keep the spring plate if it's such a bad design when they already have the solution with the XR parts?

I'm curious. I don't think it's that hard to replace the grenade plate every 30,000 miles, so that's what I'll do as a preventative measure. I've tried screeching, squealing clutch kits and I prefer the stock setup.

I'm glad you like the modifications you've made. I've made several modifications to my bikes and prefer them to the stock items. But with any change, there are consequences and they aren't always obvious and sometimes they cause some really expensive problems.

I'm glad you know how to shop around for clutch parts.Make sure that $15.00 FAG bearing isn't a Chineseum copy. The one I got from Amazon cost 26.00, last year.

I hope your clutch lives a long and happy life. I'll keep the stock setup and change the spring plate every couple of years or so. It works for me.

They didn't "already have the solution with the XR parts". The current spring plate, 37977-90, has been used in Sportsters starting in 1991, WELL BEFORE the XR1200 was introduced. The XR's got many upgraded (Buell) parts.

Good luck. Maybe that should be every 20,000 miles. Many seem to self destruct at mileages under 30,000.

Mine went 70,000. I don't think there's a reliable way to predict it's demise.

The carnage from grenade plate failure has been well documented. That actually COULD cause a mainshaft bearing to die. I preemptively got rid of the spring plate to avoid problems.
A Barnett Kevlar extra disc clutch pack (steels and frictions) was $125 on Amazon. An Energy 1 +15% was ~$35. A NOS FAG 7200B clutch release brg on e-bay was $15. I just spent another ~$60 on the XR narrow friction, judder spring and spring seat. IMHO the results make it money well spent.
Should be good for a lot of trouble free miles vs the OE spring plate and release bearing that have a track record of arbitrarily failing...
I'm the OP of this thread and no problems with the Buell XB/XR1200 judder spring setup 3 years on. FWIW I sent an email to HD's customer suggestion email address documenting the retrofit back then and got no response. Totally unacceptable IMHO that they are still fitting the grenade plate 30 years on, especially since they had a low or maybe zero cost fix on the shelf since 2002.
That being said I love my Roadster and it has a permanent home in the stable...

The only one who got an Email after suggesting better ways to built the sportster was Erik Buell; the Email was to tell him to leave H-D.

My 2007 Sporty has 47,000 on it and still has the spring plate. My 2006 went bad around 68,000. Of course my miles are highway so there is less wear and tear on the clutch.

At this point I have no intentions of removing the spring plate in the 2007 Sporty

2 1/2 years and about 60,000 miles on my 2006 with the XR1200 parts. I think the clutch is starting to go as it needed to be adjusted after 2,000 miles or so, will pull it apart in the next few days to see
