Finally got up enough courage to disassemble this spiral grip. I drop tiny parts a lot so it can be risky. Fortunately I have a exploded view of the unit. It all came apart easily enough, no dropped parts. The coil looks fine externally, no visible kinks.

I remembered an air cooled VW accelerator cable hanging on a nail in the workshop from years gone by, it looked to be the correct size. Cut the end off, ran it through the cable coil. It went in smoothly until it came to the final sharp bend in the handlebar. It binds up, there is an obstruction at that point, whether it's rust or a kink is unknown, ran the cable in and out, over and over using WD40 and PB Blaster thinking it might remedy the situation but no luck.

The coil is soaking in Evapo-rust right now, I'm hoping it's a rust blockage and will be dissolved, if not a new coil will be required.

Problem solved, thank you for all of the help. The coil soaked in Evapo-rust for several hours. Ran the VW cable through the coil, no more blockage, there must have been a pocket of rust in the coil. Greased then reassembled the apparatus and it all works fine now, the carb closes and returns to idle when the grip is twisted full forward.

I was somewhat aware that this type of grip was used in ancient times but was not aware it was used by HD in the '70s. Or maybe someone installed it at a later date, don't know that history.

A start-up attempt is imminent, oil needs to be added, battery charged, a few parts installed...then kick, kick ,kick and see what happens.

Harley was never into Revolution. Just Evolution. They admitted that.

Have a look at the parts numbers in the books. A number of parts were used on Sportsters for nearly 50 years. One day I will go through the list to find the oldest part number used on an Ironhead. I do think I remember one ending in -15 or -16.

I bought a "Junk" engine a few years back. No ignition so I put on a new Morris M3 I had on the shelf. No carb so I put on an S&S Super B, again, lying in a drawer.

Bike started 3rd kick and turns out to be in pretty much perfect mechanical condition.

You just never know your luck with these things.

That is what I am hoping for, it supposedly ran when parked in 1984. Went through the electrical and fuel systems, it seems to have good compression. Stock points ignition, stock Zenith tractor carburetor, what could go wrong.
