I slammed on the brakes and jerked my FF lid off to find the right eyebrow area (about 1/4 of the helmet) covered with blood and gore......walked the roadside w/a flashlight and found a kamakaze BAT laying exploded beside the road.
2 weeks later in the exact same spot a big arsed black-bird hit me in the chest at the same speed.
I changed my route home at that point.

Worked graveyard in 1986 at Vandenberg and had the same thing happen with an owl. I saw stars it hit so hard. I haven't been a fan of night riding since.

I've been wearing half helmets for years but last year bought a FF. Never thought that I would get used to it but slowly I did and I wear it more and more now especially in the cold weather. I got taken out by a car in the early 80s broke my leg flew over the hood of the car and landed on my head/chin/ nose. The helmet [Buco] cracked and I ended up with a concussion broken nose and some road rash but I can definitely say I would not be typing this if I didn't have one on

decades ago my best bud broke both ankles because a 90+ yr old man pulled out in front of him and he broadsided his front fender......his feet snagged on his handlebars and it slammed his face into the hood of the car.....luckily he was wearing a FF.
his little brother was ejected over his back, over the car, did a hit & roll........and walked away with mild road rash.

ECE Rated Full Face - so comfy while you skid
Hit a deer at 55mph, it just launched in front of me from a tree line. My full face HJC made the ride so nice. Now that I've learned the difference, I stick with ECE European standards helmets.

Still wearing the same half lid I bought in 1986 when they forced us to buy them.
Got a new halfer in 2014, but its still pretty, so it only gets worn on sunny days.
This new skid lid is covered in leather. Now I am dead cow head to toe.

I live in a free state but rarely go without.
Above 35 and the wind noise gets too much. (no windshield)
Even with the 3/4 helmet I use ear plugs. You can actually hear around you better with them.
Safety factor aside, tinnitus is forever.

20" box fan on medium 24/7, the white noise seems to distract me some from the frequency sweeps of the tinnitus; been living with it for the better part of three decades now...
Back on topic though...
DOT 1/2 for around town cruising...

been down hard a few times, used to wear a full face, but in Calif. it's a bit hot sometimes so I wear a 1/2 now, and I like the look. so far no crashes since.
