The thing about not lugging the engine. I get it but have not seen this in the one Ironhead, one 07 Fuelie and current 06 Roadster. I have no problem with lugging or pinging with cruising at 2000 rpm or accelerating in the lower gears from 2k. Maybe because I havent had a need for more than 1/2 throttle for anything sane on my stage one carborated 1200. Or maybe only 93 octane
Except for buying cheap I see no reason to go 883 instead of 1200. Especially the weight is the same

To play devil's advocate:

* It's more fun to do things with less that others can't do with more

* Better fuel efficiency is fun.

* Gearing makes it a blast around town and on backroads.

* Yes it's cheaper initially and I'm the long run.

But you have to remember since we got rid of our Sporty ALL our bikes (but one) are 750cc or smaller. And really the ONE is ridiculous at twice+ any two of the others in both CC's and weight!

I've had some of the questions about lugging as well since at tiny throttle openings there's not enough cylinder pressure to cause an issue. Yet, when I ask questions I get the dirty look so to speak then the pro-forma answer of "never ever"...

Mine is exceptionally smooth in 2nd or 3rd gear 1/8 throttle and 2400-ish

Agreed on the economics of the 883. Since everything is pretty much the same it really should only matter if either taxes or insurance is significantly higher on the bigger engine. In the USA, not so.

I really wanted a stock 1200S but unmodified ones are scarce now. I was looking for an unmodified 91-03 with a standard ride height, 19/16 wheel combo and a tach. Pretty much leaves the Sport and XLH. A 883 XLH, untouched except for a bafflectomy, showed up at a local dealer in great shape so I figured I could deal with the upgrade later. Probably should have waited for a Sport but it'll work out in the end.

So in my case I got the 883 because I had specific requirements for model and condition - displacement was lower on the list

Regarding the tailgaters speed target of N+1, the idiots around here even do it behind 18-wheelers when going uphill on steep 2-lane roads. All they can see is the back of the trailer and it doesn't even occur to them that the driver can't see them.
Also, there are lots of deer on the interstate around here and there are lots of cases of the front driver suddenly changing lanes to avoid one; then the second driver doesn't see the deer until it's too late. At interstate speeds, this is a fatal mistake.

It's not about the speed. Its how fast ya get there.
Sometimes I like to pull a steep hill a gear higher than usual and see how hard I can twist it and feel the torque.

Been a minute since there were Sportys in the shop.

So it was good that some friends came in with there's that were overdue for some service. It was a long afternoon but we knocked it out:

Fluids, Filters, Plugs, adjustments. Not too bad.

The his and her touring Iron and Uber-Low (a LOWERED Superlow, the rider is only 4'10") are ready to go.

Yeah the Uber-Low is so low we can't even get a drain pan under it unless we park it on blocks of wood. I'd use the lift for it and try to raise it with the lift jack, but it's hard to keep from high-centering it on the ramp and I'm not sure I could get the jack under it anyway.

Still it was nice wrenching on them again. I can't say I don't miss ours and I still flirt with a CX, I'm just not willing to part with anything else to do it, at least yet.
