Default Coil readings

Can a coil simply start getting "tired" ?

Had a problem for a while I just can't sus out and I'm convinced it's electrical ( feels like a very minor misfire) but not all the time..

New plugs, leads, carbs set up , timing is set..

Primary reading is fine

Secondary states 10-12.500k but it reads just over 10k ..

Just wondering if the coil is getting tired or starting to break down slightly ..

I noticed the other day sat warming the bike there is defo an intermittent miss albeit only slight ..

The coil operation is not a precision function. The reason for the range of resistance numbers reflects the fact that there are variations in the final product that are still considered within specs. Two brand new coils might test 2,000 ohms different. And the readings may change slightly over time.

Coils do fail, but without sophisticated equipment (o-scope) it is difficult to tell when it is just beginning to fail. It will usually continue to get worse as it fails and will become more obvious.

What Ignition Module are you using? Nosecone ignitions fail in a number of ways including mis-fires.

Do your lights flicker at all? Have you checked your Battery Cables and especially the main Harness Ground? (On a 2000, it is back at the upper rear engine mount.) The wires sometimes crack at the O-ring connector and become intermittent.

I'v gone through the " usual" stuff a while back, I will go through more thoroughly though .. The module is a stock nosecone intergrated unit ..

the miss is defo there it's not me but it's subtle and not there ( or doesn't seem to be) under load .. The best way I can describe it is say for instance you had a lead intermitantly arcing against the frame or something you could hear and feel it ..

When checking resistance of plug leads the shorter of the two was much higher in resistance than the longer one ( almost double) which isn't right as far as I know but changing them made no difference anyway..

This issue is very subtle , if you got on the bike and kept it under load you wouldn't feel anything wrong until you tried holding a steady low speed ( seems to be around the 30 mark) 40mph I can't make my mind up if I can feel it

That's a likely candidate - Although most of the external H-D modules are pretty hardy, the internal ones from H-D had a high failure rate...

If you can live with it for now, it will probably get worse - which may help confirm whether it's the coil or the ignition module, depending on the symptoms.

If you have a spare coil (I wouldn't buy one for testing), you could try swapping it in there - but with resistance numbers in the right range (and the problem not heat related) I would doubt it is the coil.

The Keyswitch & Fuse Block are two other areas where loose/broken wires may cause intermittent electrical issues. You might want to clean the fuse block & see if the key wiring is solid (wiggle key to see if anything changes).

Did you see any light flickering associated with the missing engine?

Did you check the plugs to see if there is a significant difference in chamber burn between them?

Originally the rear cylinder was richer than front but that's been addressed now.. I will have an afternoon and go through and check everything .. I will also check once dark just make sure nothing is arching .. Thanks for replies

Took it for a ride today to get it hot as I needed to check primary chain tension . Anyhow it was a bit tight roughly 1/8" or just a bit more so I adjusted it to between 1/4 and 3/8" while engine still hot.. Bike now rides much better it's pretty much behaving itself at around 30 in third

BUT

I can now here noise from primary , it's not a rattle and it's not a whine , just noise , not loud and it doesn't sound dodgy , is noise from primary " normal" on a sporty ? I know many say they make a racket and mine sort of does compared to my jap V twin so I'm not worried re the engine noise ..

Just wondering if the "miss" I thought I had and the shitty ride trying to hold a steady 30 was too tight a primary chain and it was "grabbing" for want of a better word ...

Sometimes, if the primary chain is too tight, you experience a surge-like effect as the tight spots of the chain will bind and then the looser spots will release that.

I don't know if you misperceived that as an engine miss or not?

Ride some more and see if you re-find the miss?

Possibly . It is a lot better and will happily sit at 30 without me needing to be up and down a gear Which is a great improvement on what it was doing ... I'v checked all wiring and no shorting of plug leads etc.. There is an earth wire coming from under the tank to the frame under the seat , I went belt and braces and piggybacked an extra wire from this directly to battery .. ( if it doesn't help I'v only wasted 10 mins of my time)...

Its riding much more like I would expect a bike to ride , I just wasn't buying it's a Harley thing it felt wrong ...

Re the primary, is it usual to hear noises from there ? Nothing I would consider sounding like an issue , just a noise ( not a rattle or whine) ..

Anything mechanical that moves makes noise.

The engine sprocket, primary chain and clutch sprocket are always moving when the engine is running.

If it's not banging, clattering, screeching or thumping, it's likely to be a normal noise... But I'm not there to hear it...
