Unhappy 09 XLC stalling while accelerating...

I bought this 2009 XL1200C a few days ago. I recently got back from a ride and nearing my house, my stock exhaust sounded different (like A drag pipe...not two lol) so when I got home, I looked and found that the exhaust head nuts had backed all the way off. I measured the stud OD and found some more 5/16 24 nuts to thread on. It mated up nicely and I took it for a spin around the block. I ran it gently for a bit and then I got on it after I had done a few laps. It ran fine. The bike barely has 900 miles on it.

Today, I go to the store and I notice that when I hit the throttle in 1st, around 15-20 mph it stalls and then accelerates again. In 2nd, 20-25 mph or so, it does the same thing...it stalls out for a second, and then accelerates. It seems just like a carbureted car or bike that isn't tuned.

I checked the relays and fuses to see if they were all seated and looked at my battery terminals to make sure they weren't loose. Maybe i can swap the relays??? I'm at my wits end. This is the same reason why I hate "new cars" (IE cars that are fuel injected & have computers). I was an ET in the Navy and worked as an electrician for a bit but this bike is driving me nuts. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone? Just give me an idea of what to look at or past possibly related experiences....I'm stuck with a half running bike.

Try running the diagnostic interrogation on it to see if any DTCs are logged.

This is for the older bikes, but it'll get you started anyway. If you search around here I'm sure there is an update procedure posted for the EFI bikes. Getting in is the same, the codes may be different on the EFI bike, but check it out and post em here if you have some logged and we'll get em figured out.

I'm probably taking it by my local indy shop for a peak...I'd imagine he'd run the bike for trouble codes. Do you think it would be worth it to buy a Daytona diagnostic tool ($200) or something similar, vice shelling out 60 any time I have to take my bike in? At this rate, I'll be eating dinner at the shop owner's house.

Check your plugs are they wet with gas, you might have plugs that are getting fouled up by too much fuel. Mine did the same thing after switching pipes, before I retuned my super tuner. Try running the diagnostics as 2007low said.

Maybe the previous owner had different pipes other than the stock and tuned accordingly. The header nut is loose at 900 mile? makes you wonder.

You might want to check your baffles in your "stock" pipes. Stock pipes shouldn't sound like drag pipes, I could barely hear my exhaust before I switched them out for V&H short shots <--- Wasted $$$.

Its fixed! I figured it out!!! The gas light must be EFF'd up. I put like 3.5 gallons in it. Must've been smashing on it a lot because my mileage wasn't that great, although I don't know if the dealer filled it up or just put some gas in. I'll find out on this tank. Runs like a dream now. I'm thinking you're right, the previous owner may have had pipes on it because of how soon the nuts came off. The drag pipe sound was because I had 1/4 inch between my pipe and the head. Fixed it a few days ago...and I did check the baffles on your advise, just in case, but they haven't been touched (although I'm thinking about it). I'm still looking at a diagnostic tool to have around. Thank both of you for your replies! Hope I can help out on here one day. Take care.
