Default Main shaft bearing preferences

6207 bearing. Many options, as far as shields go.
What works best? Im (over)thinking a shield on the primary side, open on the inside of the transmission, that would keep the bearing somewhat lubricated. Or just a get a bearing and go with it?

Over thinking....

I would not get a sealed bearing, Shields keep oil in the bearing, open allows it to drain.

I'll just get a good quality bearing, press it in, and go on with the project.

The m/s bearing that came out of my '83 had shields. Looked OEM. Whole primary/trans looked untouched since new [14+K miles]. My thinking is that H-D must have had a reason to put shields on it. Shields cost extra. Doesn't mean it was a good reason, however.

An old post from doc dick said the trap door big bearing should have at least the clutch side shield in place to keep the kicker gear ratchet spring out of the ball bearings. Apparently the other side is optional. I’ve never had issues with having both shields in place.

Bearings don't much like dirt, grit and other odd bits of debris.

With all of the mating rotating surfaces inside a gearbox you will always get some "stuff" floating around inside there.
The primary side is worse.

But I still suspect it just comes down yo what you have on hand or what you prefer/believe.

Ended up using a nos fafnir bearing, shielded on clutch side, open on transmission side. Installed a new cs roller bearing while I was doing things. Should be ready to go for a few miles

They do supply single side shield bearings.

On the part number most manufacturers us an S or a Z. SS id double sided S one side only. ZZ is double sided metal shield.
