Question 1979 Sportster XLS Problems

Hello,

I inherited my dad's old Sportster. It is a 1979 XLS Roadster. It sat for 20 years in good storage because it had stopped working in 95. My dad always planned on fixing it but never got around to it. After he passed I had a Harley mechanic rebuild the engine due to a broken piston rod. it has run pretty well since with a few hiccups here and there. I have been doing a lot of the minor stuff but have run into a new issue I cant seem to solve and hoping someone else has had and solved it. Lately the bike will start and run well for 5-10 mins, after which one of the cylinders stops firing.

the Spark plugs show rich mix so I overhauled the carb. changed the plugs and worked well after for about an hour. then same thing rear cylinder stops firing. I've checked the coil with a multi meter and it is showing as fine. checked the plug cables they are fine.

Has anyone else had similar issues? if so what were they?

Once your rear cyl. quits firing, pull the rear plug wire (while it is still running) and see if it is still throwing a spark, if not your coil is malfunctioning when it gets warm.

Question

Should I go to Harley for a new coil or is there better aftermarket ones that would be better?

Why is this in the 'Photos/Videos' section? Moving to 'Ironhead'.

Dont pull either plug wire while Shes running.
Thats not good for the factory ignition or Yer fingers.
The proper way to check for spark is shut Her off, pull both plugs then install the plug wires on plugs,
lay them on the heads making a ground. Then turn on and push starter button while watching them fer spark.
Before buying a coil, determine what ignition system You have..
Factory, aftermarket brand,or a points system. This determines which coil You need to buy.
And welcome to the Ironhead section
