Here's the Sportsterpedia section on Minimized Ironhead Wiring:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/techtalk:ref:elec07

It has a configuration diagram & description for using an Ultima Ignition.

Harley ORANGE wire is usually key-operated Power from a fuse.
Harley PINK wire is usually coil trigger & Tach Signal to Tach.
Harley BLACK wire is usually Ground.

For Dual-Fire Ultima Config:
Ultima PINK wire is trigger for dual-fire coil.
Ultima GREEN wire is Tach Signal to Tach.
Ultima body itself is grounded in the nosecone.

For Single-Fire Ultima Config:
Ultima BLUE wire is front coil trigger.
Ultima PINK wire is rear coil trigger.
Ultima GREEN wire is Tach Signal to Tach.
Ultima body itself is grounded in the nosecone.

Your Tach will need to be grounded to the frame/battery somewhere.

The correct question is not where the orange wire goes to, but where it comes from Every orange wire on the bike, including this one, comes from the ACC circuit breaker. That is 12 volts when the key is on.

There is [was] an "orange wire connector" in the headlight bucket. In the FSM diagram, there is one wire going in [left side of pic, lower]. there is one wire that simply loops [right side, upper], and two more that are outputs.

We leave it as "an exercise for the student" to figure out why the loop is there. There is a reason for it.

out of the tach is 3 wire, pink, black and orange.single fire ultima, black is ground, pink is coil so I guess orange is power off the switch.no factory wiring on the bike anywhere.ground up build a few years ago, nothin in the headlight body.went off my factory service manual when I wired it.absolutely no electrical problems, ever.been thinkin about wiring my street bike completely, get rid of the crap inside the bucket.maybe this winter.thanks

Tach PINK Wire --- Connect to the Ultima GREEN Wire (Tach Signal)
Tach ORANGE ----- Connect to a Fuse that has keyswitched power
Tach BLACK ------- Connect to any frame/battery ground
