I don't like the mesh idea either.
I especial don't like the hidden umbrella (04 Up) that you have to change the entire assembly.

I will probably do this, but I doubt I'll find anything definitive. I've inspected everything possible without splitting the cases, except a close look at the pump drive gear (pulling that on Wednesday, will edit this post if I find anything). Oil that's in the pressure passages looks clean, but the glitter is so fine it's hard to see anyway. Doesn't even get caught in a paper towel when pouring the oil through (at least, not any that I can see).

Oil pump pressure runs thru the crankpin and it's a stronger than the back pressure from crankcase air.
Unless I'm not understanding which bearing?
The crank bearing into the cam chest. Open roller bearing. Not sure if it would pass air at running RPM, but definitely does when rotating by hand.

Crap. should have done that for posterity.

I don't see a problem with the 04-up design. I'm happy to not have the extra spacer? & gasket that the 03-under do.

You can take the guess work out of what's in the oil by getting a used oil analysist.
That'll tell you if it's metal be be concerned with.

I hadn't thought of the crank bearing but it is splash lubed which is carried by air.

The concern with the mesh being separated oil can sit there inside the mesh at the same time air is being pulled past it.
Oil puddled there can increase back pressure and it's all slung into the vent.
