Default Front end restoration

I am currently gathering some parts to get my 68 XLH back to stock. I picked up a front end, but it needs some love.
--Has anyone used a wheel repair / restoration company? The wheel isn't bent, but the chrome on the rim is in sad shape, and the spokes are rusted.
-- The sliders are also chromed. If I remember correctly, they weren't on the original front end. Could I just strip the chrome and polish them?

You won't have much luck stripping the chrome and polishing steel.
I have never sent a complete wheel assembly out for restoration as the cost would likely be far beyond my budget.
I disassemble the wheel and remove all spokes. If the spokes and nipples are in good shape other than rust they can usually be individually cleaned with a wire wheel and look good or buy new from Buchanan. If the rim is in good shape it can be re-plated for about $200 or find a better one or aluminum on Ebay. Install new bearings and polish the aluminum hub. Reassemble and true it.
It all depends on your budget and what look you are trying to achieve.

Buchanans wont have the correct spokes for a "restoration". Stock spokes have distiguishable markings.

Is the stock rim chrome or aluminum?
The spokes don't look horrible, I can definitely clean them up.
As far as my budget, I am trying to do as much as I can to keep costs down. The sliders will need to be refinished, which will probably lead me to having them re-bushed afterward I would guess.

Not sure what rims your bike came with originally. I've heard you could order steel or aluminum. I much prefer the look of aluminum.
There is no real good way to keep the cost down as far as replating and rebushing the lowers.
Are you trying to achieve a true original restoration? If so you will have to bite the bullet and pay what is required.
If you are just trying to refurbish and build a nice bike there are options to keep cost down including plenty of good used parts on ebay from compatible years that are serviceable and ready to install.
As I previously mentioned it just depends on the look you are trying to achieve and your budget.

You talk about the chrome rims, are they steel or aluminum. Unless you are doing a 99 point restoration the Buchanan spokes will be just fine. A quick look on ebay shows a couple of complete wheels. The cost is more than I would pay but start pricing chrome. Patience and some swap meets maybe would be my advice.

if they get rebushed first you won't have to worry about scratching the chrome during the press in and out stage.i would measure the the bushing i.d. compared to the tube o.d.first.i didn't see a spec in the f.s.m. for that.

That’s what I was thinking. I can have the wheel re-done for some of those prices.
In the end it’s all worth it to me. My family has owned the bike since 1971. It’s not going anywhere.
