If there is no juice there, you have a bad battery cable. If there is juice there disconnect the battery by taking the ground wire off. Take the ignition switch out, turn it up side down and hold it in a position so none of the wires on it touch metal. Now hook the battery ground back up. Check the wire on the back of the ignition switch that comes from the battery, it should be the center post marked "B" if there is no juice there you have a bad wire coming from the battery powering the switch. If you have power there, turn the ignition switch to start and check for power on the "S" terminal on the switch, if you have no power there the switch is bad. If there is power there now go down to the small nut or post on the starter if you have no juice there you have a bad wire from the S on the switch to the starter. If you do have juice there, the starter solenoid is bad. If you decide to keep this ignition system you must make sure the bike is in neutral because when you turn the switch you are only going to have one hand on the handle bar and it could lurch forward if it is in gear. If you want to change this system to a button on the handlebars take the wire off the "S" on the back of the ignition, run it to a handle bar switch then run an extra wire from the "I" or "B" to the other side of the switch.
I so needed this!!!!! Thank you!!! I want a button!!!!

Someone mentioned blown head gasket...what the hell?!
I was going to start a new thread to deal with this drama...and the question "Will I ever get to ride this bike?"!!!

Thanks for checking up on me!!!
No need fer a new thread Dear Lady.
Nice to hear Ya got it running
Maybe its just a oil leak making the smoke..relax. Head gasket, prolly not..maybe just snugging up
the rocker box bolts and checking head bolts are tightened to specs.
As I recall it was recently rebuilt by the seller? And it running a bit rough after a month
of sitting can be expected. Was the petcock in the off position all this time?
(sounds like the float may be sticking a bit)
Hey...wheres my pics of it and Yer Shovel together?
Again...relax..

got to pin point where the smoke is coming from, but i'll put my money on an exhaust leak at the heads. does it make a chirping noise too? that's always a good indication of a head gasket. if you've had greasy/oily hands on the top end parts, those areas will smoke bad until it burns off.
