this is off a p cam i have.

that was for rubber side up, been there done that!
it is possible that the mark is worn off. the marks on the cam i have is not pronounced and could easily be worn by the shim. look down the axial length and see if there is a sign of a strike where the metal is deformed. that is more pronounced than the actual mark on the face.

Wow Bustert, that could cause someone some major confusion. I had a look at one I have. Looking at your picture, the correct line of the double mark would be the one farthest ccw from the line at 12:00 o'clock.

The three sets I have lying around have the pinion strait across from the key for the ignition then there are 10 teeth to the mark for #1 cam and 6 teeth to the mark for #3 cam. that's "P", "Q", and "C" all the same for marks.

i feel like i recall a post like pezed is talking about. tho i might just be crazy, thats certainly possible.
IF im remembering something that actually happened...
it was probably a post about the lobes themselves and i feel it was about k model and or early replacement lobes for sportsters (maybe flatties i cant remember).
the idea being removing stock lobes and figuring out how to index the new ones correctly when pressing or welding them in place.
thats the only thing i can really recall on the subject but my memory is kinda blurry.

thats true.
if i am remebering the same thread pezed is, i think it was more about how to actually jig and measure accurately in your own garage than the #s. but honestly i could be way offabout all this.

You are remembering me -- and it was a flathead -- and yes, it was about indexing the lobes to the actual timing you want.

The other half that might be in your brain are the discussions of adding valve lash to some cams as a cheap "power on the go" move.
