I choose chain on a Sportster. Easily get 15k-20k life out of a modern x-ring chain or more these days. Sprockets can go 60k+ before worn out if you stay on top of your chains. No worry about taking gravel road detours or dirt roads to campsites. Lubing takes all of 5 minutes at a gas stop, and my chains only need adjusted about every 5k-10k miles. Current one just had it's second adjustment at 13k miles (the first one was break in at 800 miles or so).

My main reason: where you going to find a belt on a road trip?

Dealers don't stock them anymore. Indys might have one laying around if you're lucky. No thanks. Seen and heard of guys stranded for days waiting on a belt to ship. I can get a chain pretty much anywhere in the country. Can even go for an ag #50 in a pinch and just deal with the short lift.

Anything more than an overnight run and I pack a spare belt, note: my spare belt is a take off, coils into three circles about 9” in diameter, and the new one gets installed in the comfort of my home. Being used means it’s more flexible and installs easier at roadside, just saying.

I usually get 50-60,000 out of a belt when used hard. The three Sporties only have 330.000 miles and I don’t push them as hard as I once did. I think I’ve blown 4 belts off between them. If Inhave a long run coming up and the current bike has miles on the belt I’ll change it out befor departure and pack th used one. One of those deals where by having a spare on hand you probably won’t need to have a spare!

330,000 miles / 4 belts is 83,250 miles per belt!
So, would you suggest a routine belt replacement at 50,000 or 60,000?

Be good for Parrothead or some other high mileage members to chime in.

Jerry, 4 belts changed out at roadside in that mileage, additional ones in the comfort of my home. Also, note that the “Stealer” can often get in excess of $200.00 for a replacement belt. You can pick them up through after market in the $130-$160 range, a significant savings. My 50-60,000 mile range is gotten running with the kids in the twistys with high r.p.m. up and down shifts which will take their toll on the belts. Do keep in mind that Eric Buell offered a 100,000 mile warranty on his bikes. I suspect the guys doing very high mileage on the open roads will get very good mileage as they shift a lot less and are easier with the throttle. Chris,”Parrothead “, probably has some notes on his belt mileage and most probably puts a newer belt on before the longer Rallies. He should be along hear shortly.
