Interesting thread. When I got my bike it came with cut drags and pre 65 type mufflers. It was too loud when on a long trip so I put a 1981(?) system on it, the one with the cross pipe on the headers. The bike was much quieter and had more midrange. Also better fuel economy. I now regret not trying the pre 65 mufflers on it out of shear curiosity!
I found some good stuff on silencer design over Christmas. When I get home I'll try and find the links. The sum of it was, for an MC, a resonator chamber followed by an absorbtion type baffle which had an exit area about 60% of the inlet pipe area. This is also the design a guy called Royce Creasey came up with in an article in Classic Mechanics in the late 80's.
There are a lot of people that don't understand wave dynamics. If two waves traveling in opposite directions and of opposite signs (+ or -, not scorpio & gemini) meet then they only cancel out at that point. Otherwise they carry on there merry way more or less undisturbed. When a wave hits a wall it is reflected and loses some energy, when it expands or contracts it also loses energy. When it hits a taper it's shape is changed which changes how the human ear precieves it. A deep and interesting subject if you like that sort of thing.
Another angle is the internal aerodynamics of the exhaust. Simplified, gas does not like meeting sharp edges and walls. If you can improve the aeros out of the exhaust then you will improve your performance without changing your silencing and if you can screw up the aeros in the reverse direction you might even help the engine during valve overlap or small throttle openings. All this is Greatly simplifying things.

I’ll let you know how loud they are...I’ve heard they’re loud, but not quite drag pipe obnoxious loud. There is a thread on here where DR DICK uses a drag pipe type insert in a high-pipe muffler, for performance reasons rather than to quieten down I think...

Seems there are lots of options for brackets:

Even one that clips to the kicker cover...best avoided?

I don’t like the way the ear on this type of muffler clamp sticks out below, and having trial fitted one, they’re actually not very good (or I’m doing something wrong) - I couldn’t really get a good seal, not enough clamping force, so might try some universal stainless type if I can find a wide one.

I used this style clamp when I put mufflers on my cut drags:

I found I had to tighten them a lot more than I expected to get a good seal, but once I did they work great.

Default Cutting drag pipes to use OEM type mufflers...

I came up with these in the end:

Thin wall stainless tube with 1/8” strip welded on to create a clamp.

Bit of a fiddle to make but let me set the pipe where I wanted it, level with the ground.

It isn’t right to call these silencers, they do not have that effect.
