Expecting someone to hear or see you is not a street survival attitude so they do you no good. Even if they do work part of the time, riding with loud pipes for safety is to put the burden of your safety in the hands of others ability to hear you. Not good. Riding like you're invisible is the only safe way to ride.

My bike came with un-baffled Rush slip-ons because the PO "wanted to hear the motor." My neighbors were not happy when I brought it home. I put the stockers back on and it's not a problem. My buddy was looking at my bike and was concerned about how loud it was.

People around you don't like the noise. Loud pipes are not your friend. Just say "NO!".

Back to reading suspension threads.......... sigh.

I agree Kbetts. My pipes are stock, and are probably going to remain that way for the forseeable future. The only thing I changed about the sucky-blowy system is the air cleaner, but even that was purely because my knee kept banging against the stock cleaner. Even without a tune this improved things, and my engine is running cooler and doesn't surge as much as it did before the change.

I've spoken to several riders on crotch rockets and those with super loud pipes, and I noticed a theme: the drivers weren't giving them much respect. Some drivers tried grabbing the brakes, some tried opening the doors, etc.
On the other hand, if I filter, the drivers tend to see me and move out of the way just for me to go through. They do not have to do that and often they don't or can't, but many still do it anyway.

Back when I had a VN900 I tried a set of vance & hines pipes for 1-2 years with "quiet baffles" and eventually I put the stocks back on as I couldn't stand them for long rides. Better dead than deaf.

Respect is what saves lives, not stupidly loud pipes. The only thing that you're doing is making a dangerous situation for all of us, because then drivers get the impression we're just noisy bastards with no respect for others. In many of my epic lane filtering adventures, I've helped cagers out with tiny favours such as removing long bits of plastic caught behind, closing petrol filler flaps, unflipping the passenger-side mirror (all with their consent of course). 100% of the time, I received a variant of "Thank you."

I wouldn't mind a set of Screamin' Eagles though (mostly for the performance), but IMO the stock pipes on my ride are the sexiest looking pipes, and besides I'm already spending money on other shit. I've heard people with Screamin' Eagles which sound great but are not stupidly loud.

If no one cuts me off at least once a day then something is wrong in the World. So ride it like you stole it cause some cell phone fool will take you out someday and that's a promise.

Absolutely correct. That's the game. They cut you off, they cut you off again, and they cut you off some more. It's definitely a daily event.

I do disagree with the last part. I started riding 1967ish, so I'm just past the 50 year mark of constant riding and winning the daily game. I still enjoy locking it up and sliding right up to their drivers door so they can clearly hear my explanation of just what kind of F'n Asshole they are. It's like oxygen, I doubt I could live without it. If they want to take me out, they are going to have to earn it.

All in all, it doesn't get any better than this, I should pay them for all the enjoyment they have afforded me over the years.

Everything helps, but there are no guarantees.

In the end you just have to drive like your invisible. Hell, they can't see my Suburban most of the time, maybe loud exhaust will help, they damn sure seem to notice my loud as hell Bronco a little better, but it's a beater, so they probably assume (and rightly so) I'll just plow right over them.

I had stock pipes once and nearly splattered by a lady(not on a cell, surprisingly, just inattentive) changing lanes. I put the defender on it a couple of weeks later and it didn't happen again. Maybe anecdotal, but it was enough for me to want the extra attention grabber. I don't rely on the noise to keep me safe, that is what defensive riding technique is for, but every bit helps. My 2 pennies, anyway.
