J&P oil temp gauge
Has anyone bought a oil temp gauge for thier 04-06 Sportster and is it leak proof, and is the o-ring as thick as the one on the original oil cap? Thanks to anyone that can answer. I saw that J&P has one for 73.00 twice what the dealer wants, but that piece of crap leaked all over.

Mine leaked all over the place.... P.O.S!! I had it in for about a month or so before it started, but after a ride one day there was a trail of oil running back along the cover. I figured maybe I accidentally overfilled the oil, but when I checked it, the level was fine. The thing is a piece of crap, and mine eventually started leaking oil under the glass of the guage, I took it off and put the stock one back in. No more problems.

I think it might be a southwest and altitude thing. I will have to wait and see if the J&P one has a thick 0-ring. When I went down 3000feet it was okay, but when I climbed back up oil all over. Maybe SFXTECH and I got a bad one but the o-ring was only half the size as the original.

H-D for the half the price (Hundred-Dollar)
I purchased the H-D 63023-05 for a mere $45 I've not noted any leak and although not the best place for a oil temp gauge it is a temp gauge which just makes me feel a bit more in control. Is it accurate, hell who knows but it gives me an operation range that easy to go by. Glance down (lift leg, actually) below 200 I'm without a care . My normal range seems to be 170 to 180 and as yet never went above 200 but bike is fairly new I run synthetic oil all around and I have a cheap-o slip-on finned cooler. More important I never (almost) could get the stock cap off without a major struggle Hey I like the looks of the stock cap and it would be really nice to have a temp gauge between my speedo and tach, just below the fuel gauge but hey a Hundred Dollars don't buy much these days. More to the point she is a "Sporty" she just kind of cuts straight to the chase

Some people have leaks, some don't. Mine does not leak but I've seen some that just spewed. The tolerances can't be that tight or you wouldn't be able to get the caps on or off. I just don't know why some would leak and others would not unless the manufacturing is very sloppy.

yeah no problems here with the H-D temp guage i can tell the temp here in Arizona by it so it must work no leaks and the glass is nice and clear.
