Default 1967 Harley Sprint SS250



Just picked up this Italian Harley today for $500. Parts seem affordable when used and are still made new from a few manufacturers. It currently doesn't run but does have spark+compression. Needs paint, polish and rust control but otherwise it is complete.

For those who don't know about it, Harley bought 50% of the Italian airplane/motorcycle company Aermacchi in 1960. They took the Italian design and rebranded it with Harley badges and added chrome. The Aermacchi factory racers placed on the podium on the world circuit. Harley didn't like its name on a losing team so they commandeered the race program and took the Aermacchi 250 to win 4 consecutive world championships in the late 60's. Its the only bike to have ever worn Harley badges and won on the world stage but is discredited as 'not a real Harley'. The VR1000 program was never as successfull.

I plan on restoring it but also converting it to a street/cafe racer. I like Either one of the following examples. A tribute to its proven racing blood since they raced slightly modified street models. I haven't decided fully yet. This is the first day of planning with a long way to go.

I like those old Sprints. Very cool and a little goofy with the kick starter on the left side.
That looks like a fun project.

I have too agree, "goofy" but, "cool".
I really like the 3rd example pic bike, engine all exposed "very mechanical looking" , it looks fast just sitting there!

Nice find! Those are getting hard to find at a decent price these days.

I have 2 of the 350 Sprints (1 whole SS 1 parts SX) and an M65.

The SS was restored to mostly factory about 25 years ago, but allowed to sit mostly since. It is on the list for me to redo one day.

The M65 was my very first bike 32 years ago. It now lives in my livingroom.

I'm really psyched to start digging into this project. 4 weeks ago i "discovered" these bikes and just missed out on a running 1971 SS350 for $300.
Do you know if the 250 can be bored to 350 or if i can swap a 350 into it?

I am not sure about boring a 250 to a 350. The engines do look very similar so a jug swap might be possible. The engines look similar wnough that just bolting a 350 in looks possible.

I could take mesurements if you needed them.
