Arrow N65C Needle Reintroduced

As many are aware the original N65C Sportster needle (27094-88) was made obsolete several years ago when the factory discontinued them. By popular demand CV Performance has reintroduced the N65C needle using our own CNC machining process found no where else. The specs of the profile and taper match those of the original and is a direct replacement.

The N65C needle was originally introduced by Keihin on the first Harley CV carburetor equipped on 1988 Sportsters. Because this first CV had no accelerator pump the needle was designed to be richer just off idle to eliminate hesitation and it used a different taper profile. Tuners soon discovered (well documented on XLF) that the N65C needle was perfect for DIY tuning when installing free-flow exhausts and air cleaners and has been a staple in performance tuning for many years.

While the other CVP needles meet the needs of specific models without wasting fuel or requiring trial and error tuning, the new CVP N65 (N65C replacement) is ideal for those who want to custom tune. The needle may be used with shims or by itself and CVP does not have specific recommendations. Please refer to the many recommendations on this forum for tuning with a N65C needle with or without shims.

From everything I've seen and testing done by NRHS as well the NOKK comes in slightly faster (richer) just off idle. The original CVP needle we make for the 883 profiles similar to the NOKK in respect to the off-idle A/F.

Having a copy of the N65C needle still available if H-D runs out is great news! I hope that someone will copy some of the other needles when they go off the market as well.

All of NRHS's publlished testing on the N65C needle that I have seen was done on an unshimmed needle at WOT and thus is largely irrelevant to the subtleties of part throttle slower street riding. If you measure the diameter of the off idle straight portion of the N65C needle you will find that it is quite a bit thinner, (richer) than the NOKK needle. However the NOKK has a significantly shorter straight portion before the taper than the N65C needle, which allows the taper to come on sooner, and which richens things up in that area sooner. You can shim the N65C for the same effect if need be.
