Default Is it Rude to Not Want the Welcome Home Party

Going to be returning from a 2nd overseas deployment non-combat.

I would much rather re-integrate quietly with family and friends.

My mother and girlfriend are looking to throw this huge welcome home party. I have had one of these before and just thinking of it gives me anxiety. Being flooded with "how was it over there" "any action" and "did you get to shoot anything" is coming at you all at once.

I appreciate the love and support but I dont want the spotlight.

Is this rude?

Thank you to my fellow veterans.

It's normal. Not rude.

The things we comprise for our family to keep them tight with us can be trying.
But you cannot beat family when times are hard.

Buck up and go into boot camp mind set. Yes sir. No sir. It will be over before you know it and your girls that love you will be happy. Then maybe break it to them gently after wards that this bothers you
"just a little" and give them your reasons on why you feel this way.

Remember they are girls with sensitive feelings. Who love your dearly.
So be gentle.

Sounds like they are throwing the party for themselves, not you. I'm like you, I didn't want any big party when I got home. I just wanted my own space and some peace and quiet. Maybe you can suggest something you would rather do.

I would feel the same way. Explain it to them. They'll understand.

Thank you for your service, but- communication is a two way street, while they feel the need to celebrate at the same time they need to respect your wishes, just saying.

Like most here, I hate the spotlight also.

But to be fair counter with an offer to take your two ladies out for a nice dinner instead.
To thank them for supporting you while overseas.
