Default So, anyone wanna talk flat track???

Daytona and the season opener is 30 days away!

Harley-Davidson has some great riders. Let's hope the off season produced some major improvement in the XG. Much has been made of the 40mm throttle body allowance but is it going to be enough? B Rob ain't no slouch. Jarod was in the top ten numerous times and Sam got a 3rd and was competitive most of 18, but the bike just wasn't enough. Kinda anxious to see what they have for 19.

I haven't followed flat tracking since the days of Chris Carr and Scott Parker.
Damn has been a long time. 30 days you say, going to have to check it out.

I was thinking HD would run a bigger-bore Street this year, after the beating they took last year. How long before someone 'flat tracks' a Live wire?

Should's seen that coming... again.

NO! Indian IS NOT being handicapped!!! Anyone running a production BASED engine, is allowed a 40mm throttle body while race-only engines must use the existing 38mm rule. That certainly sounds like Indian is being "handicapped" or "restricted" but in truth, Indian was given a pass to enter their race only engine for two years. ANNNND, since it is also a race-only engine, if anyone runs an XR750 (several did last year) they will have the same restrictions! The rule is not Indian specific. The allowance is not H-D specific! Before we go down the giving H-D favors path, consider that this applies to every other bike in the paddock! EVERY ONE which is not a special race engine. In fact, it's probably going to benefit Kawasaki and Yamaha more than H-D if recent performance is an indication.

This change very simply is to restore multi-brand racing to the sport, which is presently threatened with becoming an Indian only sport just as it was an H-D only sport during the last 20 years of the XR's reign. It's an attempt to build the current growing interest even more. Three years ago there were three or four brands in the main every race. Smith won the championship on a Kawasaki!!! Since then if you aren't riding an Indian, you're just there for fun. Just about everyone said the singles class was THE excitement last year. The reason was because anyone might win any race. There will always be those who say "remember when they restricted the Indians..." but I see this as nothing but positive for THE SPORT.

GeoK, you need to check it out. It's a whole new game! Best of all, you can watch every national on your computer - free!

Toejam503, Someone asked Sammy about that. Of course the rules do not allow for it, but he was pretty stoked about getting to try one.

NBC Sports Network showed every race last year. Also, H-D is going to need a hell of a lot more than 2 millimeters to get in the game.

NBCS did air every race, but they have a delayed schedule. Sometimes two weeks after the race. Fanschoice shows every race live as it happens.

"In our sport, power isn’t everything and it doesn’t help you on every track. ...based on Polaris’ research, a modified throttle body could flow 20 percent more ...AFT didn’t, to their credit, try to slow us down.” That's the Indian team manager Gary Gray! Here's the whole article.

According to some who should actually know, the claim is it's not particularly power the XG is lacking, but they also have the freedom (now) to increase displacement! It's the ability to hook up and put that power to good use many blame though. Some point to the traditional frame while everyone else is going to lattice frames. One thing is for sure, the sport has evolved into a truly professional level where low-budget privateers are becoming fewer. THAT will be AFT's next hurdle.

You just validated my comment, the XG needs more than a bigger throttle. That last race I watched, WITH the JUMP was interesting.

Agreed! In fact, quite a few feel increased breathing was not what was needed. It may help, but it will undoubtedly help some of the other brands though. The insinuations of Bryan Smith leaving the Indian factory gig to go back to a Howerton Kaw is kinda huge in that regard.

The new course for the Daytona TT is a first in flat track. #1, little of it is flat! #2 It's the first time (I think) any part of a flat track race has been run on asphalt! Not to mention, that portion of the track is kinda steep. It's definitely going to be something totally different. The different styles of race courses is one of the unique qualities of flat track. Every one, even among the same category is different to some degree. Personally, I like cushion 1/2 miles.

Speaking of cushion tracks. You want to see the best? Go to Willow Springs 1st weekend in May, $100K purse is what I'm told. Always a great track, great racing, Mulder puts on a program. What flattrack is all about!
