i have a guy wants to trade me a 82 sporty for my 01 suzuki marauder. dont know much about sportsters. can anyone give me some ideas about these bikes and am i making a good choice. the bike looks like its leaking oil around the oil tank and top of the engine. it also has a lot of soot in the exhaust.

I've had hondas before, got myself a 76, it leaks round the drain plugs and I've done a ton of work to it and it still needs more. But I ride it nearly every day and it's just a great feeling riding on an old American bike. It's not as fast or quick as the imports, but who needs to go fast? I save that for the 4 wheel. I like to cruise. Also people will always ask about it, just today someone said mine was the best sounding bike in town. Was cool considering it's one of the older bikes around.

Here are a couple of our technical Sticky threads which may be useful ...

what to look for when buying an ironhead

Tips For De-hibernating Your IronHead - ... a useful guide for ironheads which have been sitting neglected for a long time.

Go for it, especially if it is currently running. Leaks are usually not too difficult to fix. Mine always has a sooty exhaust.

Welcome! to the IronHead forum.

I like my '82! They have stiff, strong frames and handle reasonably well if ya don't go slamming them into the weeds. If it runs well and ya don't mind spinning a wrench, then an Ironhead might be for you. It WILL require more maintenance than yer Suzi, but it WILL have a waaaay better payoff in fun and cool. There are quite a few weld-on hardtails to buy if ya wanna go the chopper route. It can also be a good candidate for cafe racer, a street tracker, a boardtracker, a poor-man's Brough Superior, the list goes on.

Mine fell in a vat of silver paint...

Let us know if ya make the trade and post a bunch of photos!

I would trade a suzi for a ironhead any day.Thing is nothing sounds as good as an old ironhead IMO, and yes there is no better feeling then riding around on a vintage machine, that some people will think is new lol.A lot more maintanance but its worth it.

A 1982 Sporty came with a silver eagle on the front fender commemorating Sportster's 25th year.

Here's one:
