Default 81 ironhead 1000 bore .40 over Andrew's r5 cams

New to the forum! I got a 1981 Irοnhead 1000cc bore .40 over with Andrew's R5 cams. On the flywheel there is three timing marks (vertical line, single dot, and lazy 8?). I know the timing marks on the cams all have to be aligned. But does the motor have to be TDC for that? If so which timing mark do I use? And what's the easiest way to install the pushrods after installing the cams?

Hi Donklandes, welcome to the Forum.

You started your thread in the 'Forum FAQ / How To' section, which is for posts about the Forum, and how to use the forum functions, so I've moved it to the 'Irοnhead' section.

don't look at the flywheel marks for cam timing, just line up cam #2 to the pinion gear mark first and then make the others fall in line with the rest of the cam marks. once that is done and the cam cover is back on the easiest way to get the push rods back in is to put one cylinder or the other on the compression stroke (both intake and exhaust will be at the lowest point) then install and adjust the push both rods before moving on to the other pair. i always have to pry a bit to get the exhaust push rods seated, even with the adjusters bottomed out. if that happens to you just know that you will have to overcome the valve spring tension a little to get them seated. • i use an open end wrench small enough that the ball on the rod will sit on the "rails" then leverage it up into place • no such issue on mine with the intakes. good luck, have fun! welcome to the forum!!
