Default Handlebars: stock Iron/48 vs Chumps

Many posts on XLF from Iron/Forty-Eight owners asking how much higher they can go with handlebar rise without needing to replace the brakeline, wiring, or cables.

Net rise to the end of the handlebar:
Stock Iron/48: 3.75"
Biltwell Chumps: 6.00" (top-center bend is higher than the bar end)
Biltwell Frisco: 7.00”

Handlebar width:
Stock Iron/48: 28.5”
Biltwell Chumps: 30.5”
Biltwell Frisco: 28.5”

Per a rider at the Facebook Harley Sportster Touring group, she was able to install 8" Biltwell Chumps on her 2017 Iron 883 with no other changes needed. The brakeline is at its limit, but it works. EDIT (thanks Freud!): The bars on the Iron are actually Bitlwell Friscos. Friscos are 2” narrower and have 1” less rise than Chumps.

The Frisco bars have less rise than the Chumps. However, because the Frisco bars are straight acoss the top, the bar ends are actually higher on the Frisco bars than on the the Chumps.

Bottom Line: To install a taller bar on an Iron 883 or a Forty-Eight using the stock cables and brakeline, Biltwell Frisco handlebars appear to be a better choice than Biltwell Chumps.

Compared to Chumps and Friscos, H-D Mini-Apes are wider and have more rise. May need longer brakeline, wiring or cables.
Net rise to the end of the handlebar:
H-D Mini-Ape (e.g., Seventy-Two; XL1200CB): 8.75"

I know it’s an old thread but Im interested and I was wondering what hapened with your bike. The bike shown in the picture is yours? Because those are the friscos if Im not wrong, not the chumps.

I had chumps on a 08’ roadster but it had much wider and taller bars than the iron

Freud,

Good eyes! You are correct. The bars in the pictures are Biltwell Friscos. I have added edits to my original post.

I had seen lots of posts on XLF from Iron and Foty-Eight owners asking how much higher they could go with the stock cables and brakeline. The owner of the the Iron shown had posted info about mods on Facebook. The owner told me the taller bars were Chumps and that they fit with the stock cables and brake line.

You are correct. The bars shown in the pic are actually Friscos. Per the Bitwell specs, the Friscos should be an easier swap with the stock cables and brake line. And the end of the Frisco bars is actually 1.0” higher than the end of the Chump bars.

Link to reviews including some fitment comments fro Sportster owners:
- Biltwell Frisco bars: https://www.biltwellinc.com/p43/buy/...uot-black/#diy
- Biltwell Chump bars: https://www.biltwellinc.com/p51/buy/...uot-black/#diy

FWIW. The thread was not about my bike. I have a’15 XL1200CP with factory-installed mini-apes and forwards.

Thanks for this useful post. My son is looking at new bars for his 2017 Iron 883 since he is 6'3". Not having to change the wiring/cabling is a big selling point.

For a test fit, your son could get longer riser bolts and a bunch of washers to raise the stock handlebar in the clamp. Stock riser bolts are 1/2-13 X 2-1/2 (Grade 5). Stock washers for the riser bolts are 1/2 X 1-1/8 X 1/8. If necessary, leave the speedo not mounted and secure it with zip ties? Or move the speedo to the eyebrow mounting bolts; there’s a few threads on XLF about moving the speedo mount to the eyebrow bolts.
